Steel is an alloy renowned for its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for a wide range of applications across numerous industries. From construction and automotive to manufacturing and energy, steel's versatility and reliability ensure its pervasive use. This widespread usage makes it a popular and valuable choice for recycling. Producing steel from recycled scrap requires significantly less energy compared to producing steel from raw materials. It is estimated that recycling steel saves up to 74% of the energy needed for primary production.

At our two scrap metal yards in Portsmouth and Bishops Waltham, we buy scrap steel for cash. We also offer scrap metal collection in the local area, as well as skips and HIAB services for those with lots of scrap steel. The price you’ll get for your steel will depend on the type and the quality. Prices change on a daily basis due to market demand and the estimates we provide are based on a per tonne weight. Our prices are competitive with the market and we offer multiple payment methods, including cheque, BACs and same day transfer payments upon collection or delivery of the steel.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What types of steel can you recycle?

We recycle a variety of steel materials, including but not limited to structural steel, steel rods, sheet steel, and scrap from industrial processes. If you're uncertain whether your steel can be recycled, please reach out to our team for assistance.

What is the difference between scrap steel and stainless steel?

Standard steel is more rigid and prone to rusting due to its lower resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel, on the other hand, includes elements such as chromium, making it more durable and rust-resistant. We specialise in handling regular scrap steel, but not stainless steel in this particular service.

How is the price for scrap steel determined?

Several factors affect the price of scrap steel, including fluctuating market conditions, the grade of steel, and the volume you’re recycling. We regularly update our rates to ensure we offer the most competitive prices for your scrap materials.

For more information, check out our article on why scrap metal prices fluctuate.

What is the process for recycling scrap steel?

Once collected, scrap steel is sorted, melted, and refined before being formed into new products. This process helps reduce the environmental impact of mining and manufacturing new steel, conserving energy and raw materials.

Can I deliver my scrap steel directly to your facility?

Yes, we welcome deliveries of scrap steel to both our Portsmouth and Bishops Waltham branches. Please bring valid identification and proof of address if you wish to receive payment. If you haven’t set up an account with us yet, we can assist with that on the day.

How long does it take to receive payment for my scrap steel?

For scrap steel dropped off at our facility, payment can be made on the same day, provided the total exceeds £10. If we arrange to collect your steel, payments are typically processed within 24 to 48 hours after the collection.

Is it necessary to clean scrap steel before recycling?

While cleaning your scrap steel is not a requirement, clean and uncontaminated steel may fetch a higher price. We cannot accept steel that is heavily contaminated with hazardous substances like oil or chemicals.
